Mei-Kuei Feu’s practice spans the mediums of photography, video, and installation. Her interest in subjects both vital and vulnérable – especially those that are evanescent and sensitive to changes in humidity, temperature, or the weather – are crystallized in her recent explorations around the act of breathing as a way of creating spaces that are at once empty and inhabited. Her video installations explore the relationship between the body and its environment, particularly in daily commuting or transitional places, by superimposing and juxtaposing static or moving images to various materials and human-made structures. Images containing flawed, negative, blurred, evanescent, and backlit elements are both active and recurring in her work, overlapping with their opposite so as to create an area of uncertainty that opens up new transformative possibilities. Drawn to the random traces left by our breathing, she surveys its cloud-like movement and texture to capture its immaterial nature.
Mei Kuei Feu has been living and working in Montreal since 1996. A graduate of Tung-Hai’s College of Fine Arts and Creative Design in Taiwan, she also holds an MA in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She has received many public and private grants, including those from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, for her production and community art projects. Her photography and video installation work has been shown in Quebec, British Columbia, and Taiwan.
